Discover Cambodia's Northern Plains on a 3-day birding journey, with opportunities to see the Giant Ibis, White-shouldered Ibis, and an impressive diversity of birdlife.

Journey into the wild dry forests of Cambodia's Northern Plains, where exceptional birdlife and community-led conservation come together. Based at Kriel Lodge within the Tmat Paeuy Community Protected Area, this immersive 3-day experience offers the opportunity to search for the critically endangered Giant Ibis and White-shouldered Ibis, two of the world's rarest bird species.

Accompanied by an experienced English-speaking guide from Sam Veasna Conservation Tours and knowledgeable local guides, explore a mosaic of open forests, seasonal wetlands, and remote birding sites. With additional time in the field, this itinerary provides greater opportunities to observe the region's unique wildlife and gain deeper insight into the conservation efforts helping protect it.

Transport Options

Guests can choose between two booking options:

Package with TransportationFor guests requiring private transportation from Siem Reap, please book this experience through Sam Veasna Conservation Tours.

Without TransportationThis option is designed for guests arranging their own travel to Kriel Lodge. Please note that all local excursions during the experience are conducted using a VIP Goyun, a traditional Cambodian farm tractor adapted for comfortable travel through the Northern Plains. Private vehicle transport is not included in this package.

    • Accommodation:
      Standard Room at Kriel Lodge with air conditioning and breakfast included (based on double occupancy for two guests).
    • Guide Services:
      An experienced English-speaking guide from Sam Veasna Conservation Tours will accompany you throughout the trip.
    • Transport During the Experience:
      All local transportation during the tour, including travel by VIP Goyun to access birding sites within Tmat Paeuy Community Protected Area.
    • Refreshments:
      Drinking water and light snacks throughout the experience.
    • Meals:
      Lunch, dinner, breakfast, and lunch on departure day.
    • Conservation & Park Fees:
      Community conservation contribution and Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary entry fees for foreign visitors are included. These fees directly support local conservation efforts that protect the Giant Ibis, White-shouldered Ibis, and their habitat.

          Mobile signal and internet access are limited due to the remote location.
        • Weather & Conditions:
          The experience operates in a natural environment where weather and field conditions may vary and can affect daily activities.
        • Conservation Impact:
          Your visit directly supports community-led conservation efforts that protect endangered species and their habitats.
        • Single Supplement
           If you would like to stay in a private room separate from your group, a Single Supplement can be purchased as an optional extra during checkout. The Single Supplement includes private room accommodation and daily breakfast. Availability is limited and subject to room availability at Kriel Lodge.

          • Binoculars:
            Crucial for birding—the most important item! (A vailable to rent as an optional extra)
          • Headlamp/Flashlight:
            Essential, we are remote and the odd power cut may occur. Its also useful for night spotting.
          • Insect Repellent:
            Bring your own or purchase some from our supply of Kambio Nature organic repellent.
          • Sun Protection:
            Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, long light clothing is also recommended. In the cool season from November to January, bring a lightweight jacket or body warmer
          • Reusable Water Bottle:
            We encourage sustainability; refills are available at the lodge.
          • Camera:
            With extra batteries or a power bank for charging on the move.

          Logistical & Financial:

          • Cash (USD or Riel):
            There are no ATMs in the surrounding area, we do have a QR code for accepting transfers, but it is advisable to carry USD or Khmer RIel for food and drinks, and paying tips/local fees.

          Personal Medications: Any prescription or over-the-counter medications you may need.

          Booking cutoff is 48 hours for online booking; we may be able to make exceptions if you reach out to us through our Contact Page.
