The Meaning of “Kriel Lodge”

Why We Are Called Kriel Lodge?

The name “Kriel” comes from the Sarus Crane (សត្វក្រៀល). one of Cambodia’s most iconic and culturally meaningful birds.

Although Sarus Cranes are not found in Tmat Paeuy’s dry forest, they hold deep national significance. Across Cambodian culture, the crane represents:

  • Good fortune and long life
  • Loyalty and harmony – Sarus Cranes mate for life
  • Cultural heritage – the bird appears in ancient Angkor-era carvings

We chose the name Kriel Lodge because it reflects our mission: honoring Cambodia’s natural heritage, supporting conservation, and uplifting the values of the Tmat Paeuy community.

The Story Behind Our Logo

The Kriel Lodge logo draws inspiration from the graceful form of the Sarus Crane, the natural landscape of Tmat Paeuy, and traditional local architecture.

The crane symbolizes peace, balance with nature, community care, and the warm welcome offered to every guest reflecting the spirit of Kriel Lodge.

Why Use the Sarus Crane If It Doesn’t Live Here?

Some guests may ask why our lodge uses a crane symbol even though Sarus Cranes aren’t found here.

They live in Cambodia’s wetlands, while Tmat Paeuy is a dry forest ecosystem home to species like the Giant Ibis.

The crane is a symbol, not a promise of wildlife sightings, representing cultural heritage and national conservation values.
