About Kriel Lodge and

the Tmat paeuy Community

the meaning behind “kriel lodge”

why we are called kriel lodge?

Historically, Sarus Cranes were found in Kulen Prum Tep Wildlife Sanctuary, the same landscape that includes Tmat Paeuy. While they are no longer present there today, the species remains deeply connected to the area’s ecological history.

Across Cambodian culture, the Sarus Crane represents:

  • Good fortune and longevity
  • Loyalty and harmony — Sarus Cranes mate for life
  • Cultural heritage — the bird appears in ancient Angkor-era carvings

Kriel Lodge carries this name as both a symbol and a commitment. Through our conservation actions and community-led protection of habitats, we aim to help restore the conditions that once supported species like the Sarus Crane, with the long-term vision of seeing them return to Kulen Prum Tep.

The name reflects our mission: honoring Cambodia’s natural and cultural heritage, supporting conservation, and working alongside the Tmat Paeuy community to protect wildlife and wild places for the future.
