A 3-Day Itinerary for Northern Plains Cambodia
A 3-Day Itinerary for Northern Plains Cambodia

If you're looking for a different side of Cambodia, the Northern Plains are worth exploring.
This region is home to ancient Khmer sites, protected forests, open landscapes, local communities, and some of Cambodia's rarest wildlife. It is also one of the places where travelers can experience conservation and community tourism alongside their journey.
Three days is enough to get a taste of the region without rushing from one attraction to another.
This itinerary focuses on history, local communities, wildlife, birdwatching, and nature, with time to slow down and enjoy the landscape.
At a Glance
Day 1: Koh Ker or a local community village and conservation story
Day 2: Giant Ibis birdwatching and other rare and endangered wildlife
Day 3: Hiking to Phnom Tbeng Meanchey
The itinerary can be adjusted depending on where you are traveling from and what you would most like to see.
Day 1: Ancient History or Local Community Experiences
Your first day introduces you to the history and people of the Northern Plains.
Depending on your interests and travel route, you can choose between exploring the ancient site of Koh Ker or spending time with a local community and learning about conservation in the area.
Option 1: Explore Koh Ker

Koh Ker is one of Cambodia's most fascinating archaeological sites.
The site was briefly the capital of the Khmer Empire in the 10th century and contains numerous temples spread across a forested landscape.
The most recognisable structure is Prasat Thom, a large stepped pyramid surrounded by trees. Beyond the main pyramid, there are many other ancient structures to explore, making Koh Ker feel very different from the better-known temple complexes around Siem Reap.
For travelers interested in Cambodian history and archaeology, Koh Ker is a memorable way to begin a Northern Plains journey.
Option 2: Visit a Local Community

If you are interested in local life, nature, and conservation, spend part of your first day visiting Tmat Paeuy Community.
Located alongside important natural habitats in the Northern Plains, Tmat Paeuy offers visitors an opportunity to meet local people and learn more about life in a community connected to the surrounding forest and wildlife.
During your visit, you can learn about the area's traditional way of life, the importance of the local landscape, and how the community is involved in protecting the natural environment. Local knowledge is an important part of conservation here, especially in a region where people and wildlife share the same landscape.
A visit to Tmat Paeuy is more than a stop along the way. It gives you a chance to understand the people and communities behind the conservation work and to see a side of the Northern Plains that you might otherwise miss.
Evening: Arrive at Kriel Lodge
After your first day of exploring, settle into Kriel Lodge, a comfortable base for discovering the natural areas of the Northern Plains.
Take the evening to rest, enjoy the surroundings, and prepare for an early start the following morning.
Day 2: Search for the Giant Ibis and Other Wildlife
Day two is all about wildlife.
The Northern Plains contain some of Cambodia's most important habitats for threatened birds and other wildlife. An early start gives you the best chance to experience the landscape while it is cool and active.
Early Morning: Giant Ibis Birdwatching

Head out with a local guide to explore the area's forests, grasslands, and wetlands.
One of the main highlights is the Giant Ibis, Cambodia's national bird and one of the world's most threatened ibis species.
Seeing one in the wild is never guaranteed, which is part of what makes the experience special. Your guide can help you search suitable habitats and identify other species along the way.
Depending on the season and location, you may also encounter:
- White-shouldered Ibis
- Green Peafowl
- Lesser Adjutant
- Woolly-necked Stork
- Various raptors
- Other woodland and grassland birds
Bring binoculars if you have them, and give yourself plenty of time. Wildlife watching is not about ticking species off a list. Some of the best moments come from simply being in the landscape.
Midday: Return to Kriel Lodge
After a morning in the field, return to Kriel Lodge for a meal and some time to rest.
The middle of the day is a good opportunity to escape the heat, look through your photographs, or simply enjoy a slower pace.
Afternoon: Continue Your Wildlife Experience
If conditions are suitable, head out again in the afternoon to explore more of the surrounding landscape.
Your guide can help decide where to go based on recent wildlife sightings, weather, and the species you hope to see.
For photographers, the afternoon light can also provide excellent opportunities to capture birds, landscapes, and the changing colours of the Northern Plains.
Optional: Visit Boeng Toal Vulture Restaurant

Wildlife enthusiasts may also be interested in Boeng Toal Vulture Restaurant, a conservation feeding site where visitors can observe critically endangered vultures.
Despite its name, it is not a restaurant for people. It is a managed feeding site that supports the monitoring and conservation of Cambodia's remaining vulture populations.
Depending on the programme and your itinerary, you may have the opportunity to see:
- White-rumped Vulture
- Red-headed Vulture
- Slender-billed Vulture
Because feeding takes place according to a specific schedule, this experience needs to be arranged in advance.
Evening: Relax at Kriel Lodge

Return to Kriel Lodge after your wildlife activities and enjoy a quiet evening.
After spending the day looking for rare species, there is something special about ending the day surrounded by the same landscape where you spent your morning.
Day 3: Hike Phnom Tbeng Meanchey
For your final day, trade the open plains and forests for a mountain experience.
Morning: Hike Phnom Tbeng Meanchey

Phnom Tbeng Meanchey offers a chance to experience the natural and cultural landscape of Preah Vihear from a different perspective.
The hike takes you through a forested mountain environment and offers opportunities to enjoy the scenery, local culture, and peaceful surroundings.
Start early to avoid the strongest heat and give yourself enough time to enjoy the trail rather than rushing to the top.
Bring plenty of water, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and insect repellent.
Take Time to Enjoy the Landscape
One of the best things about hiking in the Northern Plains is the change in scenery.
After two days of exploring archaeological sites, villages, forests, and wildlife habitats, the mountain provides a different perspective on the region.
Take your time, stop for photographs, and enjoy the views.
Afternoon: End Your Northern Plains Journey
After the hike, have a meal and begin your journey to your next destination.
Depending on your travel plans, you can continue toward Siem Reap, explore more of Preah Vihear Province, or extend your stay in the Northern Plains.
